Meet WALLy.

WALLy started as an experiment. The product needed something warmer than a loading animation for the moments users had to wait, and something less clinical than an empty checklist when a scan came back clean. I sketched a small floating robot with an LED face, animated the whole thing in Figma initially, and dropped it into the cloud ingestion screen right before an all hands demo. 

He got out. Product managers started asking for WALLy in onboarding. Marketing put him on the homepage. The AI assistant was renamed after him. What began as a basic loading loop turned into a shared vocabulary — a character everyone on the team could point at and design around.

That accidental promotion taught me something about mascots: they don't get built in a brand exercise, they get discovered in the utility layer. When a small character earns his keep in the places nobody's supposed to enjoy — loading, empty, error — he earns the right to show up everywhere else.

Over the course of the project, the WALLy system grew to 25 distinct versions — each one tuned for a specific moment across the product, from loading and success states to empty states and marketing pages.
